Hazard
and Operability Study
The Hazard and Operability
Study, known as Hazop, is a standard hazard analysis technique used
in the preliminary safety assessment of new systems or modifications
to existing ones. The Hazop study is a detailed examination, by a group
of specialists, of components within a system to determine what would
happen if that component were to operate outside its normal design mode.
Each component will have one or more parameters associated with its
operation such as pressure, flow rate or electrical power. The Hazop
study looks at each parameter in turn and uses guide words to list the
possible off-normal behaviour such as 'more', 'less', 'high', 'low'
or 'no'. The effects of such behaviour is then assessed and noted down
on study forms. The categories of information entered on these forms
can vary from industry to industry and from company to company. The
first major advantage of using Hazop+ is that it helps you
to customise your Hazop study. The second major advantage is that it
provides a very convenient way to enter and store the study information.
The information is stored in an Access compatible database from where
it can be filtered sorted and displayed. Hazop+
speeds up the process
of recording and managing the potentially large amounts of information.
The third major advantage is that Hazop+also offers a powerful
report generator for the creation and printing of professional quality
reports.
Hazop

- Create list of items in the system under study
- Create list of parameters
- Create list of guide words
- Associate guide words with appropriate parameters
- Associate parameters with appropriate items
- Create the study form headings
- Create the action form headings

Hazop
Study
When you have set up the
Hazop study, you can use Hazop+ in the study itself. Usually
one of the members of the study, usually designated as the secretary,
will take charge of recording the Hazop information in the Hazop+
forms. The easy to use input facilities will increase the secretary's
productivity and speed up the overall study.
- Cut, copy and paste facilities
will eliminate the need to re-enter the same information repeatedly
- Risk ranking facility
will automatically generate the dependent variable values and place
them on the study form
- Action records can be
generated manually and recorded in the actions form if, for instance,
the study team cannot complete a study record because of the need for
further information
- Action records can be
generated automatically for you by the risk ranking facility
- Study records saved
in an Access compatible database
- Search and bookmarking
features to help navigation through the information
- Filter facility so that
you only display a sub-set of the study information
- Print out reports immediately
after a study session
Reports,
Import/Export
Hazop+
includes the report generator. The report generator provides you with
standard reports containing tabular data. You can also customise your
own reports in next to no time! You can print out the reports directly
or export them to a Rich Text Format file. Many software packages such
as Microsoft Word can read RTF files allowing you to include the reports
in other documents.
